While giving a brief account of theoretical and empirical modeling of electron density distribution in the ionosphere, a computer based approach to build up the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is described. A nonlinear equation is postulated to represent the IRI vertical profile of electron density in the ionosphere. The equation parameters are estimated using iteration based optimization techniques. The dependence of the final estimated parameters on the starting values is illustrated with a numerical example. The number of variable parameters might be reduced considerably when the initial parameters are judiciously chosen.
