Plasma measurements were carried out during high latitude magnetopause crossing onboard the Prognoz 7 satellite by means of a plasma analyzer, SCS, and the PROMICS experiment which contains mass spectrometers besides electron and ion energy spectrometers. Data from ion measurements in the energy and mass range 0.2 to 17 keV and 1 to 20 AMU, respectively, made during the first inbound magnetopause crossing of Prognoz 7, demonstrate that keV 0 ions (of ionospheric origin) exist in the high latitude plasma mantle with fluxes amounting to a sizable fraction of the proton flux for the same energy interval in some regions. The energy spectrum of the O ions was harder than that of the protons in the mantle. The O ion spectrum in the keV range was also harder in the outer mantle than in the inner. The He/H ion ratio was lower just inside the magnetopause than just outside it. Some physical implications of the observations are discussed.
