We present the global design of the FIREBall experiment, a one-meter class balloon borne telescope, aimed at detecting and mapping the UV emission from the warm hot intergalactic gas. After recalling the specific balloon environment, we present the highly compact optical design based on a siderostat approach and an UV fiber bundle Integrated Field Unit feeding a Littrow Offner spectrograph. The stabilization philosophy inherited from early flights with the French FOCA experiment is presented. We then describe the gondola mechanical architecture with special emphasis on the semi-kinematic mounts that have been extensively used in the mechanical design of the gondola frame as well as in the mounting of the large optics. The very good performances in terms of angular and spectral resolution achieved during the June 2009 flight validate the choices that have been made in the early conception phase to produce a simple and robust experiment. Funding of the French contribution by CNES and CNRS is acknowledged.
