The properties of fine structures are studied in 23 type II bursts at frequencies above 200 MHz. A single fine structure lasts a fraction of a second. The ratio of fine-structure intensity to bulk flux density varies from one type II burst to another, changes during the course of a single event, and has a maximum reported value of 3. The polarization of fine structures changes little in the course of an event. Also, the difference in polarization between fine structures and bulk emission is small. The results of these observations suggest that the time profiles and polarization of single fine-structure elements differ substantially from those of type III bursts.
