Observation results on line asymmetry and absolute line shift in the spectra of the solar photosphere are presented and their theoretical interpretation is discussed. Empirical data are presented on the line asymmetry and line shifts for the center of the solar disk, for center-to-limb transition, for the spectrum of the sun as a star, and for active regions. Data are also presented concerning variations of line asymmetry as a function of the phase of the solar cycle. The semiempirical approach to the interpretation of Fraunhofer line asymmetry and absolute line shifts is also discussed. The results of a multidimensional numerical simulation of convective motions in the superadiabatic region and in the solar photosphere are presented.
