Data on particles in the troposphere with a radius less than 1 micron are reviewed, focusing on the study of sources, sinks, and transformation processes of atmospheric aerosols. The chemical composition for urban, nonurban continental and remote region aerosol types are presented. The number- and surface-distributions of condensed matter are examined. The climatic effects of fine particles, the processing of aerosols through clouds, and trends in particle concentration are considered.
