The determination of the magnetopause location and structure is not a well-defined problem, either in satellite data or in MHD models. Here we assess the difficulties of obtaining a meaningful definition of the magnetopause for comparison between satellite data and the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) MHD model. We explore the structure of the magnetopause in the LFM as compared with satellite data, utilizing magnetopause crossings for storm events as well as published climatological studies. We present a case study of the magnetic storm of 31 March 2001, examining the differences between low and high resolution runs of the LFM and data from the Cluster and Polar spacecraft.
