The representation of stellar motion on the plane of symmetry in the case of a nearly axisymmetric galaxy, by means of a time-independent, two-dimensional dynamical system, is investigated. Families of periodic orbits are determined numerically when frequencies in the two axes are equal or nearly equal, and it is shown that some features of periodic orbits may be explained in terms of the second integral. Comparisons are given of the present results with those of the Verhust (1979) study, which used the theory of averaging.
