This paper discusses original work at S. I. Vavilov State Optical Institute on the development of kinoform optics since 1955 until the present and current trends in the development of this specialization. A comparative analysis of the optical properties of kinoform (holographic) and ordinary optical elements is given. The status and development trends of software for modelling and designing optical systems with kinoform elements are considered. Based on original work at S. I. Vavilov State Optical Institute and an analysis of scientific publications and patents, regions are pointed out in which kinoform elements can be most effectively used in various types of optical systems, including astronomical and high-resolution long-focus apochromats, objectives and telescope systems for the IR region, fast wide-angle diffraction-aspheric objectives, and eyepieces made from optical plastics.
