Mathematical equations for a field-theory approach to gravitation are obtained by starting with the field-theory requirement that the volume force be the covariant divergence of a field stress-energy. Conservation relations are derived in the form of the consistency conditions of the equations, and the equations are solved iteratively for the static central-body case. The numerical value of a certain parameter entering into the equation for the total stress-energy is determined on the basis of several physical arguments. It is concluded that general relativity is only a member of a more general class of field theories and that a field-theory approach to gravitation does not inevitably lead to Einstein's general theory of relativity.
