A definitive evaluation of quantum beamstrahlung, the radiation induced by beam-beam collisions, is presented which includes the field-gradient effect, and the average energy loss of the entire beam is calculated. The correction terms to the Sokolov-Ternov (1967) radiation formula for the variation of the magnetic field strength along the electron trajectory has been determined up to the second order, and it is shown that the field-gradient effect reduces radiation intensity in the classical regime and enhances it in the quantum regime. The theory is applied to quantum beamstrahlung with a Gaussian variation in e(+)e(-) bunch currents, and the correction is found to yield a substantial effect for the beam parameters of Himel and Siegrest (1985).
