By means of a hemispherical electrostatic analyzer flown aboard rockets into two auroral events, short duration bursts of enhanced suprathermal electrons were detected on several occasions when the electron flux in the energy range 50-500 eV showed a high degree of field alignment. An acceleration mechanism acting parallel to the geomagnetic field is needed to account for the field alignment. Monte Carlo calculations for the scattering of electrons by model atmospheres with exospheric temperatures of 750 and 1500 K indicated that the event at 267 km result could be explained in terms of a local parallel electric field of 1-2 mV/m. A much higher electric field, about 10 mV/m, is necessary to account for the event at 210 km.
