It is proposed that the field-aligned potential drops in the corona can be produced by the loss-cone constriction mechanism along coronal loops. Specifically, it is shown that a field-aligned potential drop of 100 kV can be produced in the corona by the dynamo process in the solar atmosphere during intense coronal mass ejection events. Since coronal mass ejection events are often observed to precede solar flares, the proposed field-aligned potential drop model is therefore indirectly related to solar flares through coronal mass ejection.
