A comparison of the occurrences of "constant height" sporadic-E (Esc) echoes and field-aligned (Es[phi]) echoes from the E-region showed that at certain times of the year at least, there was a significant probability of their simultaneous occurrence. The probability was even more significant when vertical incidence Esc echoes were range spread. It is concluded that the Esc region commonly contains field-aligned ionization.
