The spatial distribution and structure of field-aligned currents during the magnetic storm of September 18-19, 1981 in the night sector of MLT at auroral-oval heights in the Southern Hemisphere were investigated on the basis of Intercosmos-Bolgaria-1300 data. During the main storm phase, the large-scale current system extended to the equator, while the current density increased. Intense small-scale field-aligned currents were found to arise inside the current sheet and poleward from the sheet. In the transition to the recovery phase, the current system was stratified into several pairs of opposite currents.
