The 57Fe Mössbauer absorption was used to investigate ferrous ion order-disorder in pyroxenes separated from 25 stony meteorites. Equilibrated chondrites have ordered FeII in their pyroxenes, with the exception of Farmington. The examined unequilibrated chondrites, with the exception of Mezö-Madaras and Clovis No. 1, have considerable ferrous ion disorder. These results are in agreement with the theory of J.A. Wood on the origin of meteorites. Bjurbole pyroxene probably retains disordered ferrous ion, which is interpreted in terms of metamorphism at higher temperatures than Mezö-Madaras and Clovis No. 1. The unusually high degree of disorder in the Farmington pyroxene is more likely the result of reheating than the result of shock.
