Solar-proton-spectrum measurements made in the Apatity (L = 5) are
examined. It is shown that adiabaticity breaks down significantly in the
near-equatorial region at an energy of about 100 MeV even in the dipole
field. In the actual magnetosphere, this breakdown will be even more
acute with significant pitch-angle scattering.
