It is noted that a fundamental feature of secular variations of the geomagnetic field in the polar regions is the different character of the variations for the Arctic and Antarctic regions, due to the regional character of processes in the upper layers of the earth's liquid core. The high activity of the secular variations in the Antarctic makes a significant contribution to the global characteristics of geomagnetic-field variability.
