The far-field structure of radio signals in homogeneous and inhomogeneous dispersive media (the ionosphere in particular) is analyzed on the basis of ray-tracing and spectral representations. Approximate expressions describing the far field of the signals are obtained, and the theory of Fresnel volumes is used to establish the applicability of these expressions. Numerical examples are presented which illustrate the signal structure in the far field, with allowance for the effect of the external magnetic field.
