The physics of solar radiation in the earth's atmosphere is reviewed with particular attention given to the characteristics of transmission and absorption in the infrared. Consideration is then given to a two-part program at the Cagliari Astronomical Station, consisting of (1) absolute solar radiometry and solar spectrophotometry and (2) atmospheric spectrophotometry in the ozone and water vapor bands.
