Fe 2+ -F avoidance, reported in the literature in micas and amphiboles, can be accounted for by crystal field theory. The crystal field splitting parameter, O , of Fe 2+ octahedrally coordinated to F - is significantly smaller than its value when (OH) - is the coordinating anion. Thus, the presence of Fe 2+ is not favored at sites where F - substitutes for (OH) - due to smaller crystal field stabilization energy.
