An analytical method using gas liquid chromatography has been developed which provides a measure of the amount of fatty acid that can be associated with montmorillonite clay. Analysis of these acids associated with clay isolated from synthetic and natural sea water systems shows a direct relationship between the amount of acid removed from solution and its initial concentration.
