We present recent results on reconnection rates in three-dimensional reconnection events. Models of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection show a wealth of different solutions which depend, in addition to the magnetic Reynolds number, on various parameters describing the dimensions and the geometry of the diffusion region. In particular there exists no simple relation between the reconnection rate and the magnetic Reynolds number as is the case for two-dimensional reconnection. We will argue that, especially for non-stationary reconnection, the question of whether reconnection is fast or slow, a crucial one for the validity of two-dimensional reconnection models, becomes meaningless in three dimensions since there is no direct relation between flow speeds and reconnection rates. Hence magnetic reconnection can be efficient, in the sense of a high amount of reconnected flux per time, with comparatively small plasma velocities. We will discuss the observational implications of these findings with respect to the abundance of reconnection in the corona.
