Propagating vortex states, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), are well known in optics and have recently been demonstrated for electrons. While many analogies exist between photon and electron vortex states, electron vortices in addition possess an orbital magnetic moment. In the optical domain, Faraday rotation is observed for polarization, but not for superpositions of OAM states. We show here that a superposition of electron vortex states is rotated by a longitudinal magnetic field. We describe a method to create OAM superpositions in a transmission electron microscope.
