Maps of selected regions near W28, in wavebands centred on 32, 56 and 76 μm, are presented. The spatial resolution of the observations is better than 2 arcmin. The data show that Herschel 36, the star at the heart of the M8 Nebula, is associated with the remains of a circumstellar disc, which it is now destroying. They also suggest the presence of a thin, dense neutral sheet in front of Herschel 36, associated with the star 9 Sgr and which may be a fossil remnant of the layer from which this star is formed. This would be further evidence that a process of sequential star formation has occurred in M8. A model for the structure of M8 is proposed. No evidence of recent star formation is detected near the W28 supernova remnant. The obscured radio source W28A2 has the radio and far-infrared signature of a blister H II region.
