In the present paper we revisit, theoretical and experimentally, the fall of a folded U-chain with one hand suspended from a rigid support, and a pile-chain falling from a platform. Theoretically, it is assumed that the falling U-chain is a conservative system, statement which matches quite well with the experimental results independently of the type of chain. We verify that these conclusions are not valid for the pile-chain motion. In this configuration, the model should be a non-conservative one and we show that the experimental measurements also depend on the type of chain. The model calculation implies the division of the whole system into two subsystems of variable mass, allowing to explore the role of tensional contact forces at the boundary of the subsystems. This justifies, for instance, that the folded chain falls faster than the acceleration due to gravity.
