The geoeffective length in the solar wind is defined as the transverse length of solar wind flow that enters the reconnection region and hence contributes to the total polar cap potential. The geoeffective length in case of Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) is seen to be small. This is because the orientation of IMF does not favor the reconnection geometry. We will present the results of a direct determination of the geoeffective length obtained from global MHD simulation, using the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry simulation code with Northward IMF. The change in geoeffective length due to change in velocity, density and magnetic field of the IMF will be discussed. We will try to explain these results based on current understanding of the generation of total polar cap potential.
