Several methods have been investigated for the construction of an accurate 2-D fiber array. Promising results have been obtained with a method that uses 2-D masks with regular hole patterns, with fibers individually fed through the holes (a task that can be automated). The precision of the method depends on the mask and fiber tolerances (not on the assembly procedure), and a very high packing density is possible. Masks with an accuracy of plus or minus one micron can be fabricated using existing technologies. Fiber arrays fabricated by the method proposed here can be used in a variety of astronomical and remote sensing applications for high resolution optical heterodyne detection of focal plane images.
