The lunar soil specimen No. 16034-128 collected by Luna-16, consisting of 3-5% Ni, 0.5% Co with the remainder, iron was subjected to a structural analysis. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) the martensitic structure of the soil particle could have been formed under conditions of shock loading and thermal cycling, either during the impact of an iron meteorite with the lunar surface at a velocity of about 10 km/s, or by the bombardment of lunar soil iron by micrometeorites; (2) extrusion formations could have resulted from 'cyclic' loading due to micrometeorite impacts or from the development of transverse slip of high-speed dislocations due to shock loading.
