The concept of nuclear matter in physics is discussed. Theories of
superdense nuclear matter, consisting of neutrons alone, are examined
from the viewpoint of the possibility of the formation of a crystalline
nucleus in pulsars. The role of starquakes in verifying the hypothesis
of the nuclear crystalline state of neutron stars is discussed.
