Hot plasma bathed in cold neutral gas will emit Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) as a result of charge exchange. These ENAs are no longer influenced by magnetic forces and travel in straight line trajectories. A new generation of instruments that are capable of imaging the ENAs emitted from space plasmas are now in operation. The NASA IMAGE and NASA/ESA Cassini spacecrafts both carry ENA imagers, observing the ENA signature from magnetospheric plasmas of Earth and Saturn, respectively. The charge exchange reactions that produce the ENAs measured by these imagers have a negligible effect on the energy and momentum of the source ions that are neutralized. Thus, the measured ENAs carry information about the phase space densities of the source plasma. We have exploited the information contained in the ENA images of the Earth's magnetosphere acquired by IMAGE through the construction of an inversion algorithm that infers the ion source functions of the plasma from the ENA intensities. We present here our method of extracting the energetic ion distributions from the IMAGE data, an analysis of the attendant errors and uncertainties, as well as representative retrievals.
