Our project will provide high S/N images and accurate characterization of the extinction and atomic abundances in extragalactic HII regions. We propose to conduct a high S/N quantitative analysis of line ratios within the galaxies M83 and NGC 1313. Both galaxies are chosen for their abundance of active star formation sites, and large and bright HII regions. The galaxies will be imaged using the CTIO 0.9-m telescope in a series of wavelengths including H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, OIII, and SII. The line ratios across the galaxy will help constrain the extinction, temperature and density of the HII regions. Followup spectroscopy and IR imaging will improve our calibrations of line ratios and extinction. The goal will be to provide high S/N diagnostics of these galaxies to help improve our knowledge of star formation and galactic structure in a nearby system which can be applied to more distant galaxies.
