Night-side magnetic observations from Mars Global Surveyor at about 400 km altitude are used to investigate external and electromagnetically induced contributions. Contrary to dayside data, for which external contributions are expected to be strongly affected by the geometry of small-scale crustal anomalies, the residuals (observations minus values from a model of the static internal field) at the night-side are mainly of planetary scale. We present a parameterization of the time-space structure of night-side residuals and their separation into external and internal, induced, contributions by means of a spherical harmonic expansion. Approaches for the estimation of transfer functions describing induced contributions and their impact on the determination of the conductivity of Mars' interior are discussed.
