The order parameter has been correlated with the birefringence of the
nematic liquid crystalline thin layers placed in external electrostatic
field with variable intensity. An improvement in the molecular alignment
has been evidenced by the electrostatic field intensity increasing up to
about 1.7 105 V/m, then a saturation phenomenon has been observed.
