It was formerly believed that Lake El'gygytgyn in the Chukotka region of Siberia was of volcanic origin. An investigation was carried out in 1977 in an effort to determine if this formation was not rather an explosion meteorite crater. Morphological studies and an investigation of impact-metamorphism characteristics tend to confirm the hypothesis that the El'gygytgyn structure is the largest young meteorite crater in the world.
