The authors report the results of spectroscopic observations of the candidate brightest blue supergiants in three nearby spirals, NGC 2403, M81, and M101. The spectra show that many of these "stars" are actually compact H II regions, blue clusters, or composite, not single stars. While not unexpected, these results illustrate additional problems with using the brightest blue stars, whether variable or not, as distance indicators and potential pitfalls in the studies of stellar populations in increasingly distant galaxies.
