An overview of recent advances and future projects in the research and exploration of asteroids and comets is presented. Five international research missions scheduled to coincide with the arrival of Halley's comet in early 1985 will mark the beginning of a core solar system exploration program, under the administration of the Solar System Exploration Committee of NASA's Advisory Council. Missions projected for the 1990's include: a Comet Rendezvous/Asteroid Flyby; a sample-return mission whereby samples of a comet nucleus could be recovered; a multiple, mainbelt asteroid orbiter; and an earth approaching asteroid rendezvous mission. Attention is focussed on the development of low-cost instruments for sensor imaging; remote and on-site surface and particle analysis; and atmospheric measurement. The cost of the core program is estimated at one hundred million dollars, and it is argued that the projected future NASA budget could accommodate the extra cost.
