Current and proposed NASA, Soviet, European, and Japanese planetary missions are discussed. The data acquired from lunar (Apollo) and Venus investigations (Venera/Vega and Pioneer) of the atmosphere and surface of these planets, and the spacecraft for and objectives of future studies of the moon and Venus are examined. Consideration is given to the Mariner 10 flybys of Mercury, the Mercury Polar Orbiter proposal, and the analyses of comets. The goals of the proposed NASA Mars Observer and the Soviet Phobos and Vesta spacecraft designed for the study of Mars are described.
