The principal scientific importance of the Moon is as a recorder of geological processes in the early history of the terrestrial planets, and of the near-Earth cosmic environment for the past 4.5 billion years. Within the context provided by the recently agreed Global Exploration Strategy, the UK planetary science community has much to contribute to the interpretation of this unrivalled archive of solar system history.
