Experiments designed to understand the behavior of the E region Artificial Field Aligned Plasma Density Irregularities (AFAIs) were performed using the split array at HAARP, during the summer of 2010. The resulting irregularities were diagnosed using a 30Mhz coherent scatter radar. AFAIs were generated using O-mode and O+X modes at different power levels. Results show that the X-mode suppresses the O-mode AFAIs and the degree of suppression is strongly related with the irregularities involved. The O-mode AFAIs were totally suppressed when the thermal ocillating two stream instabilities were excited (Figure 1). However, the O-mode AFAIs were partially suppressed when the heating power levels allowed the presence of trapped waves (Figure 2). Figure 1. Range-time Doppler intensity plot of backscatter from E region AFAIs over HAARP. The second panel is the average of the SNR. Each heating cycle corresponds to an amplitude-modulated pulse, sweeping from 0 to 18% of the HAARP full power. O-mode generation was used for the first 4min., followed by 1-minute rest and 4 minutes using a combination of O-mode and X mode generation. The total suppression of the second pulse is observed.
Figure 2. These AM pulses sweep between 0 and 90 % of HAARP full power, in a similar scheme as Figure 1. A decrease in the intensity of the O + X mode pulse is observed.
