Mars surface exploration strategies by humans on foot and by means of land rovers are discussed, with attention paid to the different kinds of tool sets needed for each scenario. A table is presented of suggested tools which may be carried by the field scientist when exploring Mars on foot in a spacesuit. These include sample acquisition tools and mapping tools. A suggested general field routine by these scientists is proposed. A discussion then follows concerning field-transportable tools. These include items that are to be used in the vicinity of the Mars lander or rover because they are too heavy to be carried any great distance. Some relatively light- to medium-weight tools that the geologist may not want to carry at all times also fit into this category. A discussion of the general field routine for scientists close to the rover then follows. The next discussion covers the general routine to be followed within the two-person pressurized rover environment. This is followed by an examination of the rover's interior tools. A brief comment involving the use of the Mars lander laboratory concludes the paper.
