Using the geometrical interpretation of the Penrose junction conditions for constructing spherical impulsive gravitational waves we can explicitly derive exact solutions of this type with specific pre-determined properties. In particular, we present a solution describing the collision of two nonaligned cosmic strings in a Minkowski background. The strings break, due to the collision, creating four snapped semi-infinite strings which move apart and generate an impulsive wave expanding with the speed of light.
