Three MR-20 rocket experiments with artificial 'electron hole' formations were carried out in September 1988 in the northern auroral zone on the research vessel 'Professor Vize'. The rockets were launched to investigate the upper atmospheric and ionospheric characteristics in the auroral region during substorms. Atmospheric parameters were measured by rocket-borne equipment inside the artificial cloud as well as outside it. The formation and development processes of artificial inhomogeneities and the influence of an admixture of anthropogenic origin on atmospheric characteristics are studied.
