A description is given of an investigation which had been conducted to determine whether the water-bearing phase of FeOOH composition found in the study of lunar rocks could be of lunar origin. The reported experiments demonstrate that FeOOH of any structure cannot exist for any length of time on the surface of the moon. The investigation substantiates, therefore, the original proposal of Taylor et al. (1973) that the FeOOH in the Apollo 16 rocks is due entirely to terrestrial water vapor contamination.
