Mirrors: Aluminum
Scientific paper
The authors report the results of their experiments to evaluate the feasibility of cleaning a contaminated aluminized mirror surface using pulses of UV excimer laser radiation. The motivations of the experiments and some inferences on the basic physical processes involved are described first, followed with details of the experimental settings. It is observed that some of the non-organic dust particles as well as organic dirt on the mirror surface were removed by applying UV laser pulses with a level of about 0.3 Jcm-2 and the reflectivity of the mirror was improved noticeably. Laser pulses exceeding this level cause appreciable damage on the aluminized surface.
