A detailed analysis of about 60 high energy electron drift echoes recorded by the omnidirectional high-energy detector on board the ATS 5 is presented. Drift echoes were observed during moderate magnetic activity at all local times except near midnight. Drift echoes involve the whole range of energy of the detectors (0.7-2.6 MeV). Empirical laws with reasonable statistical significance are found for the variation of the characteristic period with both Kp and AE. The Mead and Williams (1965) model provides a satisfactory model for interpreting the characteristic period variations and also the variations of the midnight B at the geostationary orbit with AE.
