Impact-generated fragments have been recovered, measured and weighed in tests in which free-falling triaxial ellipsoids of approximately 10 kg mass were impacted in vacuo with aluminum projectiles moving at about 10 km/sec. Fragment mass and shape distributions have been determined and compared with those obtained by other authors under different experimental conditions. It is found that the impact parameter, defined as the distance of the projectile's trajectory from the target center, is critical in determining the target body's fragmentation mode. The shape distribution of the fragments remains constant as long as the energy/mass ratio is in the 10 to the 7th-10 to the 8th erg/g range.
