We present preliminary laboratory measurements for two samples of Martian analog particles, consisting of hematite and palagonite, respectively. We measured the scattering functions and the degree of linear polarization for unpolarized incident light as functions of the scattering angle at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The scattering patterns of these micron-sized irregular particles show remarkable differences, probably mainly due to the large difference in refractive index between the two materials. Therefore, it may be expected that their presence in the Martian atmosphere will have a substantially different effect on the Martian weather.
