In the present experiments, an artificial magnetosphere was used to study the field structure at the boundary of the magnetosphere at Alfven Mach numbers on the order of 10. The laboratory model of the magnetosphere consisted of the flow of a collisionless hydrogen plasma past a magnetic dipole. The distribution of the fields of the artificial magnetosphere in the plane of the prime meridian was determined by means of magnetic probes. A discussion of the laboratory data shows that the structures observed in the experiment can be identified with those occurring in outer space.
