New Worlds Observer (NWO) is a unique approach to overcoming the large visible-band contrast ratio between a star and its companion planet at small angular separations. Instead of placing a coronagraph or a nulling interferometer in the post-primary mirror beam train, NWO uses an external starshade positioned thousands of kilometers in front of a telescope, along the line of sight to a star. The starshade effectively blocks the incident starlight and uses Fresnel diffraction to establish diffracted phase cancellation at the telescope. Theoretically, the binary apodization of the starshade can suppress visible starlight to better than 1 part in 1010. We have assembled an experiment to test the performance of a 1/1000 scale starshade. This poster will report the experimental setup, progress, and future goals for the experiment.
